Garage is a space in your home that adds to your advantage. But unfortunately, like many families around the globe, you tend to start dumping everything in your garage and it becomes more of a store room then a car garage and has every ordinary thing stored in here apart from your vehicles and their accessories.
When things are discarded in an extra space up and down, they obviously take more space than is required. So, all you need is to set things in order, to give your vehicles their owed space. Give it a methodical change in about a month, as you do not have to overnight burden yourself and change it altogether.
You can take our advice in the matter and sort things in 5 piles, depending on the nature of each item.
- Sort and Sell pile
- A pile of Give away
- Items to be Thrown away
- Items to be Retained but Removed from garage
- Items to be Retained but Returned
The best way to get rid of extra things is to put up a garage sale and sell the things you don’t need anymore. These things can be your old stuff that is used in good old days or the stuff that you don’t need any more inside your home but can conveniently be an immense help for someone to be able to purchase it from you, in nearly half a cost or even less. These days you can even sell your things online.
While sorting, use empathy and make a pile of the things you don’t need any more but can be significant for someone to own. For instance, your children’s old toys or clothes. Your own household items that are too old to sell but still work and thus these items should be donated to the needy. Compassion for the poor and needy can help you sort your garage well. Not only will you be getting rid of old, used or unused items by giving them away and making space in your garage, but you will also feel good about being able to help others.
Another pile that you can easily sort through and which will give you a sorted look of your garage back, is the pile of the things to be thrown away. These items cannot be donated or sold and are rotting in the garage only because you didn’t find time to sort through earlier. Items like empty boxes, too dirty to use disposable cutlery, newspaper of the years gone by, broken stands or glass items, broken lamps and busted tires.
You need to make a pile of the things that are handy and could be used but are wrongly placed in the garage. They need to go inside the house or in the storeroom. Things like wood planks, charcoal to be lit easily, paint buckets and gasoline. You can even devise a shed for these things and dump them inside it. Other items like ration bags and extra stock up food to be utilized in a month, you can make a pile of these and shift them to the pantry or to the extra bedroom’s closet. Extra frames, old documents and vintage collection, sort them and make their space inside the home on the shelves.
Once you have piled up things separately and the garage has started to look cleaner and organized, you can sort the things that are to be cleaned, collected yet returned to the garage but this time in an orderly way. These items are exactly what you should keep in the garage, like vehicles, tools, accessories of vehicles and cycles.
Once you have arranged the things in piles, your garage is now organized, spacious, cleaned and sorted. But you do not have to do it overnight. This could be done in weeks or even a month, but you need to follow a pattern in your sorting out. If you leave it in the middle the sorting will not be effective at all.
You can take out few hours every weekend and categorize things. Then place things and rearrange them in their own places and you will be able to create a massive difference.
It is time now to give your vehicles their due space where they can be smartly parked and taken care of. This organizing the garage process helps you feel great in so many ways.
